Clear Your Gear

Thousands of animals including fish, sea turtles, birds, and manatees are injured or killed each year by improperly discarded fishing gear. Clear Your Gear is an initiative founded by a group of concerned partner organizations on Sanibel and Captiva to identify and implement solutions to this problem. The project's objective is to reduce the harmful impacts of monofilament and other fishing gear on wildlife and the marine environment.

Current partners include the Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW), Sanibel Sea School, J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge, the "Ding" Darling Wildlife Society, the "Ding" Darling Monofilament Busters, Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation (SCCF), and the City of Sanibel Natural Resources Department. Coastal Keepers has provided grant support for this initiative, and board members have played an advisory role. Learn more at clearyourgear.org.
